Hanoi (VNA) – A gathering was held in Hanoi on October 17 to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the Vietnam-US Society (VUS).

VUS Chairman Nguyen Tam Chien reviewed the association’s establishment and development over the past 73 years.

The association has carried out an array of cooperative and friendship activities to enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples. It has also maintained and expanded relations with more than 300 organisations and thousands of US friends and partners, Chien said.

Since the two countries set up comprehensive partnership in 2013, the association has welcomed 125 US delegations with some 1,100 guests, who came to Vietnam to seek cooperative opportunities.

In addition, various exchange activities have been organised by the association, including cultural exchanges, exhibitions, business exchange, and English language studying, among others. It has worked to address post-war consequences, such as Agent Oranage/dioxin victims and leftover bombs and mines; provide humanitarian support; and develop projects on healthcare, education, and the environment in rural areas.

In particular, the association is joining hands with several US organisations to identify information on missing Vietnamese soldiers, he said, adding that thanks to support from US friends, the remains of some 1,500 martyrs have been found.

At the meeting, members of the VUS also discussed measures to branch out Vietnam-US people-to-people diplomacy. They suggested new approaches to people-based diplomacy to meet economic growth targets and improve national security. They said that activities should be enhanced for national conciliation between the two countries. –VNA
