The Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics in Hanoi held its inauguration ceremony on Jan. 17.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, representatives from the ministries of Education and Training, Science and Technology, and professors from foreign universities and institutes attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nhan highlighted the important role of the institute in promoting and upholding the potential and advantages of basic scientific study, saying the institute will contribute to fostering and improving the quality of maths training and study in Vietnam .
Nhan expressed his hope that the institute will become a prestigious maths centre in both Vietnam and the region.
The institute’s Director, Prof. Dr. Ngo Bao Chau spoke about the institute’s recent activities, saying that the institute aims to improve the capacity of Vietnamese maths researchers and lecturers and create more opportunities for them to access advanced world maths knowledge.
Chau said the institute plans to engage in several research projects on probability maths this year. It will also cooperate with national programmes to maintain and promote maths study in high schools and universities across the country, he said.
At the ceremony, several foreign professors shared research experiences from international mathematics study institutes with the institute’s staff./.
