Hanoi, (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

-The Party Central Committee held a meeting in Hanoi on January 31 to consider and make decisions on personnel affairs.

The committee discussed the wishes to cease holding positions, stop working, and retire of Tran Tuan Anh, Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee and Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission; and Phan Viet Cuong, member of the 13th Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Quang Nam provincial Party Committee.Read full text

-Outgoing Vietnamese Ambassador to Uruguay Duong Quoc Thanh on January 30 came to bid farewell to Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs Omar Paganini who affirmed that there is plenty of room for the two countries to further step up cooperation.

Paganini expressed his hope that Vietnam will open its embassy in Montevideo soon to contribute to promote the bilateral partnership, and asked for Vietnam’s support for Uruguay’s joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) after the Latin American country submitted its application in late 2022.Read full text

-There were 950 cyberattacks on Vietnam’s information system in January, a decline of 33% and 23% compared with that of December 2023 and the same period last year, respectively.

The decrease is an initial result of the measures that agencies and units have taken to enhance cyber safety and security, with more investment to monitoring systems, problem-detecting systems and warnings.Read full text

-In a historic medical breakthrough, Vietnam witnessed the first successful delivery of a baby over three weeks after having undergone foetal heart surgery.

-The number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in 2023 reached a new record of 573,900, an increase of 15.9% over 495,051 visitors achieved in 2019, the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) announced on January 30.

- Vietnam's tourism industry stands at the threshold of a remarkable milestone, with experts asserting that an impressive figure of 14-15 million foreign visitors could be achieved this year, provided unexpected issues are kept at bay.

A recent survey conducted by Vietnam Report JSC has unveiled an optimistic outlook, with 66.7% of businesses in the tourism and hotel industry expressing confidence in more favourable prospects this year. Among them, 92.9% anticipate robust growth in revenue, while 85.7% foresee an uptick in both profit and visitor numbers.Read full text

-The Hoan Kiem – Thang Long Imperial Citadel electric bus route is poised to make its debut on February 5 to cater to the sightseeing needs of both locals and tourists who wish to explore the rich heritage sites of Hanoi, the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre reported on January 31.

- Ten best projects in the Youth Sustainable Project (YSUP) Competition 2024 have been awarded by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
