With the successful hosting of the 31 st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Vietnam ’s parliament has fulfilled its role as AIPA Chair in the 2009-2010 term, showing its responsibility to AIPA and its regional integration efforts.
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, who is also Chairman of AIPA-31, delivered this remark at the closing ceremony of the 31 st AIPA General Assembly in Hanoi on Sept. 24.
Trong said the General Assembly had approved a wide range of resolutions regarding security, politics, economic cooperation, culture and society, activities of female parliamentarians and a number of issues related to AIPA’s organisation.
Towards the successful building of the ASEAN Community by 2015, the General Assembly agreed that AIPA needs to improve the efficiency of its operations, he said.
The legislator said the General Assembly emphasised the importance of strengthening AIPA-ASEAN relations and suggested that the official meeting between AIPA and ASEAN leaders be turned into an annual event.
At the ceremony, Trong handed over the AIPA chairmanship to Chairman of AIPA-32 for the 2010-2011 term, Heng Samrin, who is Chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly.
Earlier, the General Assembly held its second plenary session under the chairmanship of AIPA-31 Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong. The General Assembly heard and adopted reports presented by its committees and decisions to announce India as a new observer of AIPA and organise AIPA-32 in Sihanoukville , Cambodia , in mid-September 2011, and heads of delegation from the AIPA member nations signed a joint communique.
Trong, Heng Samrin and heads of delegation also organised a press conference following the closing ceremony.
Deputy head of the organising committee and Secretary General of AIPA-31 Ngo Duc Manh worked with the Cambodian delegation to evaluate the organisation of AIPA General Assembly.
On the evening of the same day, Trong and his wife hosted a banquet in honour of the delegates./.
