The Vietnamese National Assembly will host the 31st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-31) in Hanoi on September 20-24.

The announcement was made by Chairman of the NA’s Committee for External Relations Nguyen Van Son, Head of the AIPA-31 Organising Committee, at a press conference in the capital city on September 17.

Son said that AIPA-31, themed “Solidarity for Sustainable Development of the ASEAN Community”, will focus on discussing issues of common concern in order to strengthen the solidarity and cooperation within the bloc as well as between ASEAN and other countries and regions worldwide.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony and Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh will receive heads of participating delegations.

The hosting of the AIPA-31 is not only a task of member countries under the rotating mechanism but also an honour for the Vietnamese NA and people, as well as an encouragement in their renewal process, Son said, adding that it will improve the role and position of AIPA, contributing to successfully building the ASEAN Community in 2015.

Being held at the time when people in Hanoi and the whole country are urgently preparing for the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, AIPA-31 is expected to leave good impressions on international friends of a changing Vietnam with hardworking, creative and friendly people who are trying to build a more prosperous country, he said.

This is also a chance for international friends to gain a greater understanding about the unique and diversified Vietnamese culture, he added./.
