Both students of the Vietnamese team won medals at the 2023 International Mathematical Olympiad. One student scored a “double” with two gold in two consecutive years. Another student made it a family affair as the two siblings won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

All six Vietnamese high school students competing in the 2023 International Mathematical Olympiad brought home medals, with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, according to the Ministry of Education and Training. The gold medalists were Pham Viet Hung, a 12th grader from High School for Gifted Students at the University of Natural Sciences under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Nguyen An Thinh, a 12th grader from Tran Phu High School for the Gifted in Hai Phong City.

With this achievement, Pham Viet Hung made history on the list of special contestants of Vietnam's International Mathematical Olympiad team as he won the gold medals in two consecutive years. Previously, in the 2022 competition, Hung also won the gold medal.

Double golds

During the 40 years Vietnam has participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad, Viet Hung was the 9th contestant to achieve this excellent achievement.

The first person to win a double gold medal at the event was Professor Ngo Bao Chau in 1988 and 1989. Before Viet Hung, in the 2015 and 2016 competitions, Vu Xuan Trung from Thai Binh High School for the Gifted, Thai Binh Province also won two gold medals in a row, setting an unprecedented record for the school.

Two siblings reaping gold medals

For Nguyen An Thinh, the gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad brought him and his family great pride. Thinh's brother Nguyen Thuan Hung, a former student of Tran Phu High School for the Gifted (Hai Phong), also won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2019.

This is the first time in the history of the Vietnam Mathematical Olympiad that a family with two siblings won gold at the world's most prestigious math competition for high school students. Thinh majors in Information Technology but achieved high scores in an exam specializing in Mathematics.

For Tran Phu High School for the Gifted (Hai Phong), this is even a more historic feat as siblings have brought home two out of five gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad. This is a record within the school's history of achievements.

According to information from the Ministry of Education and Training, with two gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals, Vietnam ranked 6th out of 112 countries and territories participating in the tournament this year.

The best finish of the Vietnamese team in the history of the International Mathematical Olympiad was 2004 (4 gold medals, two silver medals) and 2017 (4 gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal)./.
