Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Sakaba Mitsuo has introduced Japan ’s Asian economic strategy, in which Vietnam is considered to serve as a strategic partner to contributing to economic development in Asia as well as in Japan.
Japan will also continue to provide Official Development Assistance (ODA) for Vietnam with a large scale in the fiscal year 2010 (starting from April this year) to support Vietnam ’s infrastructure that is so necessary for development, Ambassador Sakaba Mitsuo said at a press conference in Hanoi on March 3.
“Vietnam is a strategic partner of Japan and the two countries' leaders have expressed their commitments to close cooperation and development assistance,” he stressed.
The ambassador reminded the press that during the talks between Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung last November, the two leaders agreed on Japan ’s increasing ODA for Vietnam . In addition, at a meeting this January between Vietnam ’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem and his Japanese counterpart, the two sides outlined contents for implementation of Japan’s increasing ODA pledges.
“So, both sides are now to promote the coordination of large scale ODA projects," Ambassador Sakaba Mitsuo said.

This has brought a total commitment of Japanese ODA for Vietnam in the 2009 fiscal year to a record high of 145.613 billion yen (roughly 1.56 billion USD).
Since resuming ODA provision to Vietnam in 1992, Japan has registered as Vietnam’s largest donor with a total commitment so far topping 1,55 trillion yen./.
