The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) charged another former Khmer Rouge cadre with crimes against humanity on March 27 .
Ao An, 79, is facing charges of extermination, persecution on political and religious grounds and other inhumane acts at detention centers under the late Pol Pot regime.
The United Nations-backed ECCC was established in 2006 with the intent to seek and deliver justice for victims of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime which claimed the lives of nearly 2 million innocent Cambodians from 1975-1979.
In 2010, the tribunal sentenced ex-chief of Tuol Sleng prison Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, to life in prison for war crimes against humanity.
In early August of last year, two ex-leaders of the Pol Pot regime Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan also received life sentences for the same crime. The two have appealed the sentence.
They are now being tried the second time, this time on the charges of killing of ethnic Vietnamese and Muslim Cham minorities, forced marriage and rape.-VNA
