Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The Niah Caves complex in Sarawak, Malaysia, has been officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).
In a statement on July 27, MOTAC said that the recognition was awarded during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee, which is being held from July 21 to 31 in New Delhi.
The prestigious designation was decided by the 21 member states of the World Heritage Committee, which is chaired by India.
With this recognition, the Southeast Asian nation now has five World Heritage Sites recognised by UNESCO, including Gunung Mulu National Park and Kinabalu Park (2000), the Historic Cities of the Straits of Melaka, Melaka and George Town (2008), and the Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley (2012).
Malaysia is seeking UNESCO’s recognition of more areas in the country, such as the FRIM Forest Park in Selangor, Belum Park, and the National Leprosy Control Centre./.
