An anti-terrorism drill which aims to protect important oil and gas projects was held in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on August 16.
The drill was co-organised by the Ministry of Public Security, the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group and Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.
It simulated the occurrence of a fight when watchmen of the Phu My Fertiliser Plant prevented some farmers’ cultivation from violating the gas pipeline corridor.
The incident was suddenly driven in a dangerous direction when some reactionaries mingled and roused thousands of people to raise banners and overrun the plant.
At the risk of a riot, the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Steering Committee on Anti-Terrorism directed the provincial police to block key roads and report to the Public Security Ministry for further guidance and coordination forces.
After detecting the ringleaders, disguised police officers captured them while mobile forces isolated and separated the crowd to detain the remaining extremists, who later were told to disperse.
At the appearance of 10 armed terrorists who killed some watchmen and held the plant employees, a specialised unit worked with authorised provincial agencies to seize the terrorists, rescue hostages, defuse bombs, extinguish fires, provide first aid, revive the factory’s operations and stabilise local security and order.
A number of experiences were learnt from the drill, which will raise relevant units’ capacity to prevent terrorism and sabotage as well as activities of criminals and hostile forces.-VNA
