HCM City (VNA) –How to achieve more transparent and participatory trade negotiations is themain focus of a workshop in Ho Chi Minh City on August 20.

The workshop onStrengthening Transparency and Participation in the Process of Negotiation ofTrade Agreements of the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI) was held withinthe framework of the third APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting.

Delegates from APEC member economies debatedtrade under public scrutiny and proposed measures to overcome challenges tomore transparent and participatory negotiations of trade agreements.

They noted that there is alack of policies in some countries to ensure the engagement of the civilsociety, private sector and other stakeholders who want to be part of theprocess, explaining that trade is becoming nearer to each citizen of bothdeveloping and developed economies.

Felipe Lopeandia from the Directorate General of International EconomicRelations of Chile’s Ministryof Foreign Affairs said to get into the civil society, technicalcontents of trade agreements should be understandable because they are relatedto citizens.

“It is important that citizens can understand fully what have beennegotiated in trade agreements,” he told the Vietnam News Agency’s reporters.

During the workshop, government officials from Chile, Australia and NewZealand shared their countries’ experience in negotiating theTrans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement.-VNA
