ARF Defence Officials Dialogue opens in Da Nang

The ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Defence Officials Dialogue officially kicked off in the central city of Da Nang on May 18.

Topping the meeting’s agenda are ways of enhancing defence cooperation among ARF member nations in response to climate change and measures to strengthen the coordination among armies of ARF countries.

Established on July 25, 1994, ARF currently has 27 members, including ASEAN nations – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – 10 dialogue partners of ASEAN – the US, Japan, China , Russia, India, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the European Union, and others, namely Papua New Guinea, Mongolia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste.

ARF’s objectives are to foster constructive dialogue and consultation on political and security issues of common interest and concern, and promote confidence-building and preventive diplomacy in the region.

Over the past 15 years, ARF has made remarkable contributions to the region’s peace and security, especially in accelerating dialogues and cooperation, and enhancing mutual understanding and trust among its member nations./.
