Artisan, student share passion for folk music

Over the years, the ‘dan bau’ (monochord) has been revamped by many generations of Vietnamese instrumentalists to feature not only in solo performances, but also as part of orchestras performing on do

With a great passion for the single-stringed monochord, Vu Le Minh, a student of the Vietnam National Academy of Music, has sought out anything he could to understand more about the one-of-a-kind instrument. Artisan Do Viet Dung’s workshop is one of the ideal places for him to enrich his knowledge on the musical instrument.

Minh’s love for the monochord has been with him since he was a kid. As such, meeting an artisan who carefully crafts monochord zithers is a delightful experience.

The intimate conversation between monochord player and maker does not only pull art lovers closer but also nurtures their passion for Vietnamese traditional music. -VNA
