ASEAN is now the largest importer of Thailand’s food and agricultural products, accounting for one-fourth of the country’s total trade with the world market (about 1 trillion THB) in terms of these products.
According to Pisan Pongsapitch, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS), the cross-border trade of agricultural commodities and food between Thailand and its four neighbouring countries of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia has a tendency to grow in both value and volume thanks to the on-going regional collaboration in reducing trade barriers.
He said Thailand mainly exports vegetables, sugar, chicken and pork meat to these countries while importing beans, corn for animal feed and shrimp from them.
Bilateral trade between Thailand and the four countries is worth around 100 billion THB and is expected to increase in the future, he added.-VNA
