The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from May 6-8 will hold its seventh Defence Ministerial Meeting (ADMM), the highest defence mechanism within the organisation, in Brunei ’s capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, according to the Brunei’s government website.
The annual ADMM will discuss current defence and security issues and the challenges facing the region.
It also aims to promote mutual trust and confidence through greater understanding of defence and security challenges as well as enhancement of transparency and openness.
The theme of this year’s meeting, "Securing Our People, Our Future Together," is consistent with ASEAN's efforts towards an ASEAN Community by 2015, in particular, the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC).
The ASEAN’s cooperation in defence sector has grown steadily since its inception in 2006, especially on the issue of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
The ASEAN Defence Ministers have adopted concept papers to advance the cooperation in this area, including the Concept Paper on the Use of ASEAN Military Assets and Capacities in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and the Concept Paper on Defence Establishments and Civil Society Organisations Cooperation on Non-Traditional Security.-VNA
