ASEAN defence ministers to gather in October

Defence ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its dialogue partners will convene for the first time in the capital city of Hanoi on October 12.
Defence ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) and its dialogue partners - Australia, China, India,Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the US -will convene for the first time in the capital city of Hanoi onOctober 12.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Vietnamese Deputy Minister ofNational Defence, made the announcement at a press briefing held inHanoi on July 29 immediately after a ceremony to send invitations toASEAN and its dialogue partners Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM+) tothe ministers via their ambassadors.

Inpreparation for the ADMM+, Vietnam will hold the ASEAN Defence SeniorOfficials’ Meeting Retreat (ADSOM Retreat) from August 4-6 in Ho ChiMinh City and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Retreat (ADMMRetreat) on October 11 in Hanoi in order to reach a consensus inASEAN on the organisation as well as the agenda of ADMM+.

In addition, as host country, Vietnam will consult the dialoguepartners about the meeting preparations including the organisation andagenda.

The first ADMM+, themed “Potentials,Prospects and Directions for Practical Cooperation within ADMM+”, willcreate a foundation for cooperation among countries participating themeeting.

This is a chance for the defence ministersto discuss and share the opinions of each country as well as identifypotential and directions for cooperation within ADMM+ in the years tocome, Vinh said.

The meeting agenda is expected toinclude an assessment on the regional security and discussion onpotential, prospects and directions for practical cooperation withinADMM+.

The ministers are expected to sign a joint statement at the end of the meeting, Vinh said./.
