The ASEAN Experts Group on Competition (AEGC) held a meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on September 9-10 to develop a joint vision and strategic plan for post-2015 competition.

The meeting discussed goals and an action plan for competition for the 2015–2016 period.

These are essential preparations for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, a crucial milestone in the organisation’s history. AEC will deepen economic integration throughout the region and drive community-building efforts forward.

According to the AEC Blueprint 2009-2015, member states will introduce policies on competition by 2015. Late 2015 will see the implementation of a comprehensive competition law in at least seven member states.

During the meeting, the AECG reaffirmed their commitment to increasing member states’ understanding of competition, and strengthening legal frameworks and core competencies in law enforcement and institution-building, thus contributing to an effective regional mechanism to address cross-border competition.

AEGC meetings aim to build consensus on regional integration amongst ASEAN leaders. It was established as part of the Competition Policy and Law in ASEAN (CPL) project funded by GIZ, the German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation.-VNA
