Hanoi (VNA) – The Myanmar government has pledged to promote the government-corporate-society (GCS) partnership for water security and sustainable development.
Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Summit on Water which opened on December 12 in Yangon, Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said the GCS partnership will offer great opportunities for water service enterprises within the framework of integrated water resources management in Myanmar.
The Myanmar government will continue its efforts to strengthen water security and develop the necessary policy and legal framework for water-related investment in the country. Aung San Suu Kyi also invited potential investors at home and abroad to engage in the country's bid for sustainable development of water resources.
Pointing out that the Asia-Pacific region is the most prone to water-related disasters in the world, she warned that the rising frequency of water-related disasters in the region has forced the Myanmar government to respond with unity and resilience.
She urged all governments in the region to do more to cope with the growing climate change challenges, citing a report of the Asian Development Bank that only a number of countries have been investing wisely in disaster risk reduction projects and programmes.
