Attendees at the event included the General Director of the United Nations’ Office in Geneva, the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other diplomats.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh and Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao, who are both visiting Europe, attended the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy PM Ninh highlighted Vietnam’s achievements and emphasised that they were the result of sacrifices and efforts made by the Vietnamese people under the outstanding leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
They also came about through precious support, assistance and cooperation from countries, friends and people around the world, he said.
The Deputy PM wished overseas Vietnamese in Switzerland success in their endeavours and hoped they would thoroughly integrate into the local community and strive to preserve their national identity.
The August Revolution and National Day celebrations were also held in Canada the same day.
Trade between the two countries hit 3 billion USD in 2014 and 1.8 billion USD in the first half of 2015.
Up to 5,000 Vietnamese students are pursuing different training courses in Canada.
The country’s friendship and cooperation with Vietnam have been partly strengthened by the 250,000-strong Vietnamese-Canadian community. -VNA
