Austrian President Heinz Fischer left Ho Chi Minh City on May 31 , at the end of his three-day visit to Vietnam.
During his trip, President Fischer held talks with President Truong Tan Sang, paid a courtesy visit on Party Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong, and met with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung. He attended several forums on business and education as well as visiting some cultural spot around Ho Chi Minh City .
A number of memoranda of understanding on cooperation were signed during the visit, covering various fields such as industry, trade, energy and tourism. Agreements were also made on health care, fire prevention and fighting and vocational training projects with ODA from Austria .
The leaders of both countries reach a consensus on stepping up cooperation at multilateral forums and in international organisations, particularly the United Nations.
The two countries have seen positive developments in economic, trade and investment ties, with a two way trade of 630 million USD in 2011, up two fold over 2010
They also agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, transportation, new energies, health care and the environment.
President Fischer’s visit, which takes place as Vietnam and Austria are preparing to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties (December 1, 1972-2012), is an important milestone that marks a step forward in their traditional cooperative relationship.-VNA
