Binh Dinh ramps up fight against illegal fishing

South-central province of Binh Dinh has recently deployed four working groups to supervise fishing activities in the local area in a bid to crack down on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, under the direction of the European Commission (EC).

Ports in the provincial capital of Quy Nhon have been packed with fishing vessels since early May, and all must now register instead of entering and departing freely.

Besides patrols, the proper handling of violations is an effective measure in improving awareness among those operating local fishing ships, especially smaller ones.

The four working groups have worked hard since April to ensure order and safety at Quy Nhon Fishing Port. Twenty-three violations have been handled, with fines issued totalling nearly 3,500 USD.

Binh Dinh province is fully on track, together with other localities around the country, to gradually crack down on IUU fishing./.
