The 900-page Vietnamese version of the book, entitled “The Soviet Union and Vietnam in the First Indochina War – 1954 Geneva Conference”, make debut on August 28 (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese version of a Russian book highlighting the role of the Soviet Union-Vietnam cooperation in the success of the 1954 Geneva Conference was unveiled in Hanoi on August 28.
The 900-page Vietnamese version of the book, entitled “The Soviet Union and Vietnam in the First Indochina War – 1954 Geneva Conference”, features nearly 200 documents and images about the meeting, international and communist movements supporting peace in Indochina, along with the situation in Vietnam from 1950 to the 1954 conference. They were collected from national archival agencies of the two countries.
The book provides valuable information about not only the Geneva Conference but also the history of international relations and the Vietnam-Russia ties.
Director of the National Archives of Vietnam Dang Thanh Tung said the agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina, signed in Geneva in 1954, was a historic milestone.
The success of the Geneva Conference was greatly contributed to by Soviet Union-Vietnam cooperation in diplomatic struggle. The Soviet Union’s assistance, including at the Geneva Conference, was a crucial factor helping Vietnam restore peace on the basis of independence, unity and territorial integrity, he noted.
To reiterate the significance of the Geneva Conference and clarify issues of the French war in Indochina, the National Archives of Vietnam and the Federal Archival Agency of Russia coordinated to publish the book in Russian in 2017 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Russia’s October Revolution.
Tung said the Vietnamese publication is part of the Vietnam-Russia Friendship Year 2019 and also to mark 25 years since the signing of the treaty on basic principles for the Vietnam-Russia friendship.
The book launch ceremony was attended by Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Konstantin Vasilievich Vnukov, Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Hanoi Natalia Velerievna Shafinskaya, along with representatives of ministries, sectors and the Vietnam-Russia Friendship Association.-VNA
