Hanoi (VNA) - The eighth congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) will take place in Hanoi on November 21-22, with 1,250 delegates set to attend, heard a press briefing on November 13.
The VBS will review its work during 2015-2017, discuss tasks for 2017-2022, and ratify its revised sixth charter during the congress.
Participants will also select members of the VBS Patronage Council and Executive Council for the 2017-2022 tenure.
In the next tenure, the VBS has nine tasks, with a focus on promoting the solidarity and development of the VBS in international integration, monks and nuns training, as well as cultural exchanges and people-to-people diplomacy.
Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien, General Secretary of the VBS Executive Council highlighted the achievements the VBS has made over the past year, saying that its chapters have been established in all 63 localities nationwide.
The VBS hosted the 2014 United Nations Day of Vesak. Pagodas have been built on Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago and in border areas as spiritual border markers safeguarding the nation’s territorial sovereignty, he said.
Associations of Vietnamese Buddhists have been formed in Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Angola while those in Laos and Cambodia have been consolidated.
The VBS has mobilised more than six trillion VND (264 million USD) for charity and social work, according to Thien.-VNA
