The Asian-American Gateway (AAG) sub-sea cable was cut on August 13, along the section that runs from Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in the south to Hong Kong.
Vietnamese service providers who rely on this connection have seen many international services, including the internet, halted until the end of August.
The failure may have been caused by a vessel anchored in the region or by a landslide on the seabed. However it is expected to be back into operation by August 31, said Lam Quoc Cuong, Director of the Vietnam Telecoms International (VTI).
The Asian-American Gateway is a 20,000-kilometre sub-sea optic fibre cable that connects Southeast Asia with the North American mainland, crossing the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii . It also links up with Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam.-VNA
