The 5th National Assembly of Cambodia began its 2 nd plenary session on April 1 without the presence of any lawmakers from the main opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
According to Cheam Yeap, senior lawmaker from the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin sent invitation letters to CNRP members to attend the session but none of them showed up.
Son Chhay, a parliamentarian from the CNRP, said that all CNRP lawmakers will not attend the session until political measures are taken, affirming that laws approved by only one party will be illegal.
In its people's congress held on March 30, the CNRP adopted a resolution stating that the party does not acknowledge the official results of the July 2013 general election and that it is demanding a continuous investigation into election irregularities and a thorough reform of the National Election Committee (NEC).
The CNRP has boycotted parliament since September 23, 2013 when the first session convened.
Last year’s election saw the CPP win 68 seats of the 123-seat National Assembly, with the remaining taken by the CNRP.-VNA
