Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Cambodian Ministry of Interior on March 23 issued a statement saying it does not recognise the new leadership of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
In the statement signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Sar Kheng, the ministry said it had received the election result of the CNRP’s extraordinary congress on March 2.
However, the election did not adhere to the party’s regulations, the ministry said. It requested the party to follow its statutes.
The CNRP organised an extraordinary congress in early March to elect a new leadership after Sam Rainsy resigned as CNRP President and left the party on February 11.
The congress elected Kem Sokha, Vice President, as the CNRP’s new President and Mu Sochua and Eng Chhay Eang as Vice Presidents.-VNA
