Phnom Penh (VNA) - After completing the COVID-19 inoculation drive in the capital city of Cambodia on June 22, the Cambodian army began to administer the COVID-19 vaccine in other provinces, with nearly 60,000 people residing in Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampong Speu and Takeo having receiving the first shot.

The Khmer Times newspaper on June 23 quoted Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army and commander of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, General Ith Sarath as saying that thanks to experience gained from the successful vaccination programme in Phnom Penh, the work in other provinces is going more smoothly. Provincial officials are working very closely with the military while the people have become better aware of the importance of vaccination against COVID-19.

The number of new cases in Phnom Penh has dropped remarkably to around 100-200 daily against the 400-500 cases recorded each day last month, which is attributed to the successful vaccination drive, and the people's adherence to strict prevention measures.

As of June 21, Cambodia has vaccinated over 3.4 million people, accounting for 34.16 percent of the 10 million adults eligible for COVID-19 vaccine.
The country logged 655 new cases of COVID-19 on June 24, of which 72 cases are imported, raising the national tally to 45,366, and the number of deaths increased to 493./.
