Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has suggested that the deadline of 2030 to achieve the goals of sustainable development (SDGs) might need to be reset because the progress of the agenda has been affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

SDGs, also known as Global Goals, were adopted by all UN member states in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

According to Khmer Times, in his remarks at the leaders’ meeting on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond, PM Hun Sen said that this disruption stems from a number of reasons, including a decline in efforts by each member state because of a need to shift policy priorities and resources to combat coronavirus and the growing adherence to nationalism and protectionism by some global superpowers.

The Cambodian PM also emphasised some priority work related to finance, saying that this is important for developing countries to work towards fulfilling the 2030 finance agenda.

Private investment and capital flow to developing countries is required, particularly the promotion of foreign direct investment and public-private partnership mechanisms, he stressed.

The Cambodian government recently has announced measures to further promote economic growth and prepare for the post-pandemic period, which aim ensure that poor families will continue to receive social assistance during this difficult time./.
