Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has announced a change in the schedule of forming a new government to early September, earlier than the time he mentioned earlier.

Speaking to thousands of garment factory workers in Kampong Speu province on August 8, Hun Sen said the new National Assembly will hold the opening session on September 5 under the auspices of the country's King Norodom Sihamoni, during which the new National Assembly will vote for the establishment of a new government.

The new government will be formed on September 6 with the swearing-in ceremony to be held in the afternoon, he said.

On September 7’s morning, the new cabinet will convene its first meeting.

Earlier on August 6 at a meeting with athletes and coaches before they depart for the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, PM Hun Sen said that as there was no post-election problem, he decided to form the new government prior to the schedule, so that he would be able to attend and deliver a speech at the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York and other meetings in Europe.

The sixth general election of Cambodia on July 29 drew 20 parties vying for 125 seats in the parliament. According to the National Election Committee (NEC), the election was a success with the involvement of 82.89 percent of voters, much higher than the turnout rate of 69.61 percent in the fifth election in 2013.

The NEC announced on July 30 that the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won the most votes in the election, with more than 4.8 million votes or 76.78 percent.

As schedule, NEC will announce the preliminary results of the election on August 11 and the official results on August 15 if there is no complaints.-VNA
