Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia highly appreciated ASEAN tourism ministers for strengthening cooperation and experience exchange in response to COVID-19, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said in his opening remarks at the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF 2022) in Cambodia’s Sihanoukville on January 18.

The news site freshnewsasia.com quoted the Cambodian PM as saying that Cambodia is pleased to see the gradual reopening of countries in the region and the world, and the solidarity and active cooperation among ASEAN people, partner countries and international institutions in responding to common regional and global challenges.

In this spirit, Cambodia introduces the post-COVID-19 Recovery Plan for ASEAN Tourism, and the Phnom Penh Declaration on a More Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient ASEAN Tourism, among others, the PM added.

Hun Sen said he appreciated international delegates’ participation in the forum, although it took a long time to travel and do immigration procedures due to the epidemic.

He said over the past two years, the COVID-19 crisis has had a great socio-economic impact, especially on the tourism sector, causing the number of tourists to each country in the region to decrease sharply.

“Clearly, the tourism sector will face new trends in the needs to develop digital socio-economy, tackle climate change and deepen the consideration for global public health,” Hun Sen said as quoted by the site./.
