Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Phnom Penh court on September 16 ordered the arrest of Sam Rainsy, exile leader of the dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
Judge Koy Saop asked authorities to promptly seek, arrest and bring Rainsy to court for offending Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.
Spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Justice Kim Santepheap said if convicted, Rainsy could face a jail sentence of up to 10 years.
During an interview granted to the Radio Free Asia (RFA) on September 12, Rainsy said words that insulted the King.
At a press conference with the Lao Prime Minister in Phnom Penh on September 12, Cambodian PM Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia has asked ASEAN member states to arrest and extradite Rainsy and his supporters if they enter their territories./.
