Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced on June 5 that his ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has won the fourth commune elections, which was held one day earlier.
PM Hun Sen wrote on his Facebook page that, according to the informal figures, the turnout was 6,743,329, and the CPP received 3,529,400 votes equal to 51.39 percent.
The Cambodian leader said in this year’s elections, the CPP received 300,000 votes more than in the 2013 elections. He also expressed his hope that the CPP will earn major of votes in the general elections scheduled to take place in July 2018.
This was the fourth commune elections of Cambodia since the first in 2002. Twelve political parties contested the elections, with the ruling CPP and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) being the major contestants.
Addressing a press conference later on June 4, CNRP spokesman Yim Sovann admitted that the CNRP lost in the elections, as it won just 46 percent of the votes.
The National Election Committee said preliminary results will be revealed on June 5, while official results will be publicised on June 25.
The commune elections are seen as a test for the popularity of political parties ahead of the national elections in July 2018.-VNA
