Hanoi (VNA) – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced on November 19 that Cambodia will never allow any foreign military bases in the country.

Addressing a cabinet meeting broadcast live on Facebook, the PM affirmed that the Constitution of Cambodia bans the presence of foreign troops or military bases in its territory, whether naval forces, infantry forces, or air forces.

Cambodia does not need foreigners to fight in its territory like in the past, nor does Cambodia allow itself to become a place for ideology or weapon experiment, he said.

The Cambodian leader’s announcement was made following a report on November 15 by the Asia Times, citing unidentified diplomatic sources and analysts who have said that Beijing had been lobbying Cambodia for the naval base in the Southeast Asia’s southwest region, which could host frigates, destroyers, and other vessels of the People's Liberation Army Navy. –VNA
