Cambodia produced 9.32 million tonnes of paddy rice in 2014, a slight fall from 9.38 million in 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry revealed in a recent report.
According to the report, the country grew rice on 3.2 million hectares in the year.
Local agricultural production contributed to 28.7 percent of Cambodia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014.
In 2010, the country set a target of exporting 1 million tonnes of rice by 2015. However, Commerce Minister Sun Chanthol admitted in February, 2015 that it was far from achieving the target due to capital shortage and operational inefficiencies of the milling sector.
The Southeast nation only exported 387,000 tonnes of rice last year, he said.
At present, 61 Cambodian companies are shipping rice to 40 countries and territories worldwide with China, France, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Belgium as their largest buyers.-VNA
