The Hanoi Municipal Emulation and Reward Council has selected 10 nominees to submit to the Hanoi People’s Committee for examining and recognising the title of the 2010 capital city’s outstanding citizen, said a meeting of the Hanoi Party’s Committee on August 23.
The council nominated Prof. Vu Khieu, 94. He is among authors of and made contributions to studies on Hanoi and was chairman of the council on the project on Thang Long’s millenium book. He was awarded the title of Labour Hero in 2000.
Historical Prof., People’s Teacher Phan Huy Le, 67, is one of the leading experts on Vietnam’s history. He devoted his life to the study of Hanoi history. His efforts as chief author of the compiled documents of the Thang Long Royal Citadel, Phu Dong Festival and the Doctorate stelae at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi were highly applauded by the UNESCO.
The professor also chaired a number of workshops on Thang Long-Hanoi and took part in personnel training courses on measures to preserve the capital’s cultural and archaeological relics.
Born in 1926, researcher Nguyen Vinh Phuc has studied and written about Hanoi for more than 50 years. Readers in Hanoi and the whole country call him the “Hanoiologist”.
Hoang Vinh Giang, 64, has made significant contributions to training international-standard athletes, coaches and referees of Hanoi . He was conferred with the title of Labour Hero in 2005.
Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, who works for Hanoi Moi newspaper, initiated and organised the implementation of the ceramic road project along the Red River four years ago. Her unique idea has attracted the involvement of dozens of local and foreign painters, hundreds of artisans from ceramic craft villages as well as 500 Vietnamese and international children. The project is nearly completed and a special gift for the millennium year of the capital city. The 39-year-old painter was presented with the Bui Xuan Phai Prize in 2009.
The Council also selected other outstanding nominees. According to Phung Minh Son, deputy head of the Municipal Emulation and Reward Board, the 10 outstanding citizens of Hanoi 2010 will be honoured at the Hanoi municipal patriotism emulation congress for 2010-2015, scheduled for August 28 at the Hanoi Friendship Palace./.
