Central Highlands to replant coffee trees on 19,000 hectares

Dak Lak (VNA) – Provinces in the Central Highlands plan to replace old coffee trees on 19,000 hectares, according to the Steering Committee of the Central Highland Region. 

Of which, Lam Dong will replant 7,313 hectares this rainy season and Dak Lak will replant 3,479 hectares. 

Since 2010, the region has replaced nearly 80,000 hectares of old coffee trees. 

The Vietnam Coffee – Cacao Association, the Public-Private-Partnership programme and the Nestle Vietnam Company have assisted farmers with seedlings and seeds for the replacement. In Dak Lak alone, farmers have received 6,255 kilogrames of seeds and 6.9 million seedlings. 

According to the coffee replanting project, from 2014 to 2020, the region will replant 120,000 hectares, including 45,600 hectares in Lam Dong and 30,000 hectares in Dak Lak. 

The Central Highland is the largest coffee producing region in Vietnam, accounting for nearly 95 percent of the country’s coffee area and 99 percent of output. 

The country exported 1.27 million tonnes of coffee for 2.25 billion USD in the first eight months of this year, a year on year surge of 40 percent in volume and 20.7 percent in value, according to statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.-VNA
