The northern central region still has untapped potential for agricultural investments, said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat at an investment promotion conference in central Quang Binh province on Dec. 6.

With a 670-km coastline and advantages in forests, water resources and labour, the region has strong conditions for further agricultural development, particularly in forestry and seafood, Phat said.

The region, which includes the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Thua Thien-Hue, is also suited for more trade with neighbouring Laos and Myanmar, he added.

Investors have hesitated to invest in the region since it is frequently hit by natural disasters that might increase business risks, he acknowledged, but the problem can be solved if investors draw up suitable business plans and take full advantage of higher technologies.

At the Dec. 6 conference, part of the investment promotion programme for agriculture and rural development during 2009-15, the regional provinces delivered a call for investment in such sectors as rubber plantation, seafood breeding, food and wood processing, and livestock breeding.

They vowed to offer investors a series of incentives, including land use fee exemptions and financial assistance in labour training, market development and transportation.

Three deals in the agricultural sector were inked among businesses during the event./.
