Ceremony marks Vietnam-Uruguay 25-year ties

The Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina and Uruguay in coordination with the Foreign Ministry of Uruguay jointly held a ceremony in Montevideo on October 24 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam-Uruguay diplomatic ties.

Montevideo(VNA) – The Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina and Uruguay in coordination withthe Foreign Ministry of Uruguay jointly held a ceremony in Montevideo onOctober 24 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam-Uruguaydiplomatic ties.

The event was attendedby Uruguay Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Vietnamese Deputy Minister ofIndustry and Trade Do Thang Hai, who is the co-Chair of the Vietnam-UruguayJoint Committee on economic, trade and investment, and Vietnamese Ambassador toArgentina and Uruguay Dang Xuan Dung, among others.

Addressing the event, theUruguay Foreign Minister highlighted the traditional relationship andfriendship between the two countries, noting that the establishment of diplomaticrelations with Vietnam 25 years ago was an important milestone and a properstrategy of Uruguay.

The formation ofbilateral ties showed the two countries’ common viewpoint in developing theirrelations amidst the complicated world situation over the past two decades.

Nin Novoa underlinedthat the two Governments have continuously fostered bilateral ties in allfields, while actively coordinating with and supporting each other atmultilateral forums.

The two sides haveregularly exchanged all-level delegations to share experience and act togetherfor common interests, he said, adding that the far geographical distance couldnot hinder the development of the friendship between the two countries andtheir people.


The diplomat alsoreaffirmed the Uruguay Government’s commitment to giving continued priority tothe intensive and extensive development of ties with Vietnam in the future inall fields.

For his part,Ambassador Dang Xuan Dung reviewed important milestones in bilateral relations since1993 when Vietnam faced many difficulties from embargo and the world situationchanged significantly.

Relationship withUruguay is a success of Vietnam in its policy to develop ties with traditionalfriends in the Latin-American region, he said.

The ambassador saidthat over the past years, along with progress in political relations, the economicand trade ties between the two countries have significantly improved, withtwo-way trade rising from 71 million USD in 2012 to nearly 120 million USD in2017.

He expressed his hopethat in the future, the two sides will continue working closely in delegationexchange, promote promoting the efficiency of existing cooperation mechanismssuch as political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries, and continuenegotiating collaboration documents to set up a favourable legal corridor forbilateral partnership.

On the occasion, theVietnamese Embassy also held Vietnamese Day in Uruguay to introduce localfriends to the traditional culture, handicrafts and special food of Vietnam. Aphoto exhibition was also organised, with 30 photos highlighting the culturaldiversity and landscapes of Vietnam, as well as the country’s socio-economicdevelopment in the renewal period.-VNA

State President Luong Cuong warmly welcomed King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on his first visit to Vietnam, stressing that the visit holds historic significance as the first high-level exchange between the two countries since they established diplomatic relations 45 years ago (1980–2025).
