Hanoi (VNA) - Leaders of educational institutions across the country pointed out that ChatGPT poses challenges in testing and assessing students, especially in the field of social sciences where ChatGPT can be utilized to answer essay questions.

In the face of numerous concerns about the impact of ChatGPT on education, many experts believe that the introduction of artificial intelligence products like ChatGPT is an irreversible trend. This presents a challenge but is also an opportunity for the education sector to promote development.

A "teacher" in the "pocket"

Assessing ChatGPT as a positive signal, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Head of the Academic Affairs Department, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said the chatbot can filter through a large volume of information about an issue and summarize it briefly only by pressing the enter key. This application is a useful tool for students to learn and refer to information and documents for learning.

This has been verified at Funix Online Programming Training System which has purchased a premium service package of ChatGPT in the past month to train more than 5,000 students throughout the system.

Le Minh Duc, CEO of Funix said that ChatGPT is a very good support tool for the training process at Funix when learners can actively ask the chatbot to find information they need before asking the instructor.

“Initially, there were concerns that ChatGPT would replace the role of teachers. But in fact, when learners have more background knowledge, they have more questions and are also more confident to ask questions. As a result, they ask the instructor more in-depth questions. The instructor has to answer more questions, which elevates the quality of training,” Duc noted.

As a student directly applying ChatGPT in learning, Tran Ba Nien, a student of Funix said that the chatbot’s answers helped. “At first, I relied on ChatGPT. But after a while, I realized it was just a support tool and sometimes the information ChatGPT gave me was not accurate. I had to check again. For more in-depth information, I still have to ask the instructor,” said Nien.

Challenges for testing, evaluation

In charge of training at a large educational institution with many fields of study, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Head of the Academic Affairs Department, Vietnam National University, Hanoi admitted that ChatGPT poses challenges in testing and evaluation for the education sector. It can be used in the social science field as it can reproduce answers to essay questions fairly well.

“Personalized testing with deep analysis requirements from a personal point of view could be the solution to this problem. Besides, testing needs to be a regular activity, assessing the whole process, not just based on the score of an exam,” said the professor.

Education experts affirmed that ChatGPT is a step forward, an inevitable trend of technology that the education industry needs to adapt and take advantage of to promote educational development. According to them, the immediate thing to do is to teach learners to understand the positives and negatives, and how to use ChatGPT responsibly and ethically./.
