Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung kick started the construction of Vam Cong Bridge, an important part of the Central Mekong Delta Region Connectivity project, at a ceremony on September 10.
Vam Cong Bridge, the second bridge spanning the Hau River, a tributary of the Mekong River, will connect Lap Vo district of Dong Thap province with Thot Not district of Can Tho city.
Speaking at the ceremony, PM Dung said along with other projects such as the Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong highway, the Can Tho and Rach Mieu Bridges, and the Central Mekong Delta Region Connectivity project, Vam Cong Bridge will improve the road network in the region, contributing to regional socio-economic development in Mekong Delta provinces.
The 2.9km bridge will take 48 months to construct. It will have six lanes and a maximum speed of 80km/h.
It is estimated to cost 271 million USD, funded using Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the Republic of Korea and counterpart capital from the Vietnamese Government.
Besides Vam Cong Bridge, the Central Mekong Delta Region Connectivity project also includes the Cao Lanh Bridge, the Cao Lanh-Vam Cong road, a bypass around Long Xuyen City, and the My An-Cao Lanh road.-VNA
