Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has approved a proposal by the Finance Ministry to reduce toll fees by 25-30 percent for container trucks over 18 tonnes and 40 feet-long on the Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Expressway.
The ministry submitted the proposal to the Prime Minister after HCM City 's Cargo Transport Association and Department of Transport sent multiple petitions protesting the fees.
Under the proposal, the fee for container trucks over 18 tonnes and 40 feet-long will be 448,000-480,000 VND (21-23 USD) instead of 640,000 VND (30.5 USD).
Thai Van Chung, general secretary of the HCM City Cargo Association, pointed out that the 25-30 percent cut will be only temporary and that other container trucks still faced stiff toll fees.
He said the toll fees should be reduced by 50 percent for all container trucks to help companies overcome economic difficulties and to contribute to lowering inflation.
The association plans to conduct further research and send another petition to the Ministry of Finance, according to Chung.
According to the Department of Transport, many vehicles, especially container trucks, switched to National Highway 1A after the expressway began collecting tolls on February 25.
This led to overcrowding and more accidents on Highway 1A.
The Cuu Long Corporation for Management, Investment and Development of Traffic Infrastructure is responsible for collecting toll fees.
