A round-table for Asian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to contribute suggestions to the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) opened in the central city of Da Nang on April 23.
Participants at the meeting exchanged information on the implementation of the MDGs in each country with a focus on gender equality and empowerment for women.
According to President of the Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation Nguyen Thi Binh, women, who account for half of the world’s population, play a decisive role in all aspects of life.
If women were given favourable conditions to fulfil their duties to their families and society and had sufficient skills, the world would be a better place and people all around the world would be happier, she said.
Participants also discussed and proposed measures that need to be taken at national, regional and international levels in order to fulfil the goals on schedule in 2015.
The meeting also agreed that the “Da Nang Declaration” would be submitted to the UN Economic and Social Council.
In 2000, the heads of states of 189 UN member countries ratified and committed to implementing the Millennium Declaration with development goals that need to be reached by 2015 relating to hunger alleviation and poverty reduction, universalisation of education, gender equality, child and maternal health care and sustainable environment.
This year, the UN will review the implementation of MGDs and put forth measures to achieve the goals on schedule./.
