Defence minister hosts US National Security Advisor

Defence Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich and US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien shared the view that the defence ties between Vietnam and the US have positively contributed to the bilateral comprehensive partnership, during their meeting in Hanoi on November 21.

Hanoi (VNA) –
Defence Minister General Ngo XuanLich and US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien shared theview that the defence ties between Vietnam and the US have positivelycontributed to the bilateral comprehensive partnership, during their meeting inHanoi on November 21. 

The defence cooperation has developed in line with agreementsreached by high-ranking leaders and defence ministries of the two countries,they said. 

Lich spoke highly of the significance of the US delegation’svisit that took place on the occasion of  the 25th anniversary of the bilateraldiplomatic ties (1995-2020) as well as outcomes of collaboration in post-warconsequence settlement. 

He highlighted the projects on dioxin remediation at Bien Hoaairbase, provision of support to Vietnamese people with disabilities in thelocalities affected by Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin, bomb and mine consequencesettlement and the search for US soldiers missing in action, along with theUS’s assistance for Vietnam in UN peacekeeping operations and improvingcapacity of Vietnamese coast guards. 

For his part, O'Brien affirmed that the US attachesimportance to the comprehensive partnership with Vietnam, and backs a strong,independent and prosperous Vietnam,.

He expressed a hope that the country will play an increasinglyimportant role in the region. 

The US will continue to consider cooperation in handling warconsequences a focus and foundation of the bilateral defence ties, O'Brienstressed. 

On this occasion, the US official thanked Vietnam for its supportof the search for missing-in-action US servicemen, and pledged to push aheadwith joint projects and activities in this regard./.
