Deputy PM: Gov’t able to keep 2018 inflation below 4 percent

The Government is capable of curbing the 2018 inflation rate at less than 4 percent as set by the National Assembly, according to Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Government is capable of curbing the 2018inflation rate at less than 4 percent as set by the National Assembly, accordingto Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue.

The Deputy PM was speaking at a conference in Hanoi on December 27 to review theGovernment’s price management and inflation control in 2017 and orientationsfor next year.

Hue, who is head of the Government’s Steering Committee on Price Management,asked the Ministry of Finance to closely monitor budget collection andspending, and improve the efficiency of public spending and investment.

The State Bank of Vietnam needs to run a tight and flexible monetary policy inline with market developments, he said, adding that the Ministry of Healthshould consider time for adjusting checkup and treatment costs for peoplewithout health insurance cards in 18 remaining cities and provinces whilereducing medicine prices by 10-15 percent.

He urged the Ministry of Transport to negotiate with investors and banks on BOTfee reductions and cooperate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade inboosting logistics connection to cut down costs and increase the economy’svalue.

Regarding education service prices, the Deputy PM requested the Ministry ofEducation and Training to apply a mechanism that enables universities to registertuition increase levels and times.

He also noted that the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development must ensure goods supplies during the Lunar NewYear festival and other major holidays.

According to a report delivered at the conference, the country’s consumer priceindex (CPI) in 2017 was estimated to increase 3.52 percent against last year, fulfillingthe target of keeping the inflation rate under 4 percent for the whole year.

Major reasons behind the CPI rise include hikes in the prices of health careand education services, fuel and construction material price surges as well asan increase in regional minimum wage, said the report.-VNA

More preferential credit available to businesses

Under SBV requirements, commercial banks are to provide Vietnamese-dong loans to SMEs and growth-driving sectors at rates at least 1 percentage point per year lower than their average rates for loans of the same maturity. They are also required to consider waiving or reducing service fees for eligible customers in line with regulations and their financial capacity.

Over 60% of long-stalled projects have obstacles resolved

Of the 8,002 long-stalled projects, 4,938 completed the settlement of obstacles in line with conclusions of the Party Central Committee and resolutions of the National Assembly and Government, as well as relevant Government decrees and guiding documents as of July 20, up 564 projects from the previous month.

Ho Chi Minh City to integrate IoT into smart transport infrastructure

To promote IoT application in smart transport, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Chairman has assigned the Department of Construction to lead the deployment of IoT in the construction, management, operation and maintenance of transport infrastructure. The department will also review and propose integrating IoT sensors and smart monitoring devices into transport construction, renovation and upgrading projects across the city.
