A final race along a road named after the legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap wrapped up the national “Return to Dien Bien” cycling tournament in the northwestern city on May 6.

More than 170 cyclists from Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia and Timor Leste participated in the six-day event, which forms part of the activities to mark the 60 th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory over the French.

They rode from Hanoi to the northwestern cities of Hoa Binh and Son La before arriving in Dien Bien.

The first prize winners were Nguyen Thi That in the women’s event and Nguyen Tan Hoai in the men’s category.

The tournament was an occasion for the athletes to pay tribute to the war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the 1954 historic triumph and for national liberation.

At the closing ceremony, the People’s Army newspaper, the organiser of the contest, granted 120 scholarships (each worth one million VND) to children of Dien Bien soldiers and two houses worth 120 million VND (5,640 USD) to the families of fallen war heroes.-VNA
