A delegation from the National Assembly and international organisations paid a field trip to the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien to learn about the locality’s HIV/AIDS prevention and control.
Working with the local leaders, representatives from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) advisory group on HIV/AIDS prevention and maternal, newborn and child health, the World Health Organisation and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in Vietnam spoke highly of the province’s efforts in the work and studied the reasons for a high rate of HIV/AIDS infections among ethnic minorities and treatment by Methadone.
The delegation visited some HIV/AIDS treatment establishments and met with patients with iron will to triumph over the disease and better their lives.
According to Pham Xuan Koi, Vice Chairman of provincial People’s Committee, Dien Bien has recorded 7,500 HIV-infected people since the first case is detected in 1998.
As many as 291 new HIV-infected cases were reported in the first ten months of 2014, a reduction of 155 cases from the same period last year.
By 2015, the province strives to constrain the HIV infection rate among high-risk groups, especially those with drug injection, via providing more and better counseling and testing services while expanding the scale of Methadone treatment programme.-VNA
