EC inspectors evaluate Vietnamese aquatic products

Officials from the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) under the Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG-SANCO) are making a fact finding trip to Vietnam .

Officials from the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) under the Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG-SANCO) are making a fact finding trip to Vietnam .

The ten day trip will review how the country controls veterinary medicines as well as the quality and safety of aquatic products for export.

On September 11, the officials met with several Vietnamese agencies, including the National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department, the Department of Animal Health, the Directorate of Fisheries, the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Divided into two groups, the FVO officials will visit fish farms and businesses that process and export aquatic products during their trip.

The Commission, in its role as guardian of the European Community’s Treaties, is responsible for ensuring that Community legislation on food safety and animal health and welfare is properly implemented and enforced.

As an integral part of the Commission, the FVO plays an important role in ensuring that only safe and quality foodstuffs enter the European Union.
