The Vietnam Association of Endolaparoscopic Surgeons (VAES), one of the newly established scientific associations, has contributed many achievements to Vietnam ’s medical sector, Health Minister Nguyen Quoc Trieu said at the VAES second congress in Hanoi on Nov. 25.
The first endoscopic surgery was performed in the world in 1987 and in Hanoi and HCM City , Vietnam , in 1992. VAES was set up at a congress on Feb. 24, 2006 and three centres in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and the former imperial city of Hue have provided training in the field to Vietnamese experts.
By 2008, all provincial and district hospitals could perform basic endoscopic techniques and many centres could use complicated techniques in liver and oesophagus resections.
During 2011-2015, VAES will develop the application of special endoscopic techniques in one main centre and basic techniques to serve people at localities nationwide.
The association will promote international cooperation in the field, publish a journal and host a scientific conference in 2012.
The congress elected Asso. Prof. Tran Binh Giang of the Vietnam-Germany Hospital as President of the association, along with a 23-member executive board./.
