Phnom Penh (VNA) – The English version of a memoir by President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Heng Samrin, titled “The People’s Struggle: Cambodia Reborn”, was released at a ceremony organised by the parliament in Phnom Penh on November 26.
As part of the activities marking the 40th anniversary of Cambodia’s victory over the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime (January 7, 1979 - 2019), the event attracted the participation of more than 100 parliamentarians, high-ranking government officials, youth representatives, and reporters.
The 148-page book aims at giving readers insights into the life of the 84-year-old Heng Samrin, particularly his engagement in revolutionary activities against the Khmer Rouge and in Cambodia’s recovery after the regime was toppled.
Heng Samrin was among the 14 founders of the Kampuchea United Front for National Salvation, which was established on December 2, 1978. In the memoir, the official describes how he had looked for ways to contact the Vietnamese side for support and collaborated with Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in fighting the Khmer Rouge and saving Cambodia from the genocide. The book also includes photos on his visits and working sessions with Vietnamese leaders though different periods.
Published by the Singaporean-based EDM Books company, the memoir is scheduled to be first available in Cambodia and the US, and then sold online on Amazon in early 2019.-VNA
