EU funds project to promote sustainable forest management in Quang Tri

The central province of Quang Tri has approved a project funded by the EU to promote sustainable partnership between smallholder forest owners and enterprises in sustainable forest management in response to climate change.

Quang Tri (VNA) –
The central province of Quang Tri has approved a project funded by theEU to promote sustainablepartnership between smallholder forest owners and enterprises in sustainableforest management in response to climate change.

The projectwill receive 800,000 EUR in non-refundable aid from the EU via the MedicalCommittee Netherlands-Vietnam (MCNV) and be carried out by the Association ofQuang Tri Smallholder Forest Certification Group over 36 months.

It aims toenhance the engagement of the smallholder forest certification association andsub-associations in sustainably managing forests and monitoring reduction inemission greenhouse gases caused by deforestation, forest degradation as wellas payment for forest environmental services.

Another aim of the project is to strengthen the partnership between firms and forest businesscooperatives and farmer groups in the supply chains of acacia and tung oil certified by the Forest StewardshipCouncil (FSC).

Quang Tri isnow home to over 22,000 hectares of FSC-certified forests, the largest area ofthe country. The province aims to increase the area to at least 60,000 hectaresby 2030./.
